Lac Sheets

Flattening the Lac into sheets as a method to 'copy' shapes.

Creating lac sheets can be used as a technique to ‘copy’ existing forms, once the sheet is heated to the right temperature you can use the elasticity of the material to lay it on objects and in that way to take their shape.

recommend : read ‘first steps’ to get information about melting temperatures.

Once the seedlac is heated into one chunk, you can start working on it. To start flattening the lac chunk I use a rolling pin. I recommend to keep a heat-gun next to you, to keep the material warm and workable.

When a thick sheet is starting to form, you can use your hands to stretch the material.

You can work with different thickness. Keep in mind, as you go thinner the material becomes more and more fragile.

Once you got to the thickness you wish for, you start heating the sheet from a distance. Your aim is the it will be equally warm in all parts. Then you can lay the sheet on an object/surface to ‘copy’ its form.

Keep in mind that the material cool down quite quickly and loose its elasticity. You can always use the heat-gun to re-heat it, make sure to do so from a distance to prevent creating holes.
